Preparations for snow that Myrtle Beach area residents should know

Updated 1:05 P.M.

The North Myrtle Beach Public Works Department suggests the following safety precautions and advises that bridges and critical Public Safety areas have been pretreated with salt brine to reduce the risk of ice accumulation. A second treatment was applied early this morning, focusing on major intersections to ensure safer travel conditions for commuters and emergency vehicles, according to an email from the City of North Myrtle Beach.

The North Myrtle Beach Fire Department has increased staffing levels for all shifts from Tuesday through Thursday to provide rapid response to potential emergencies, the email said.

Public Safety Recommendations from North Myrtle Beach

  • Stay off the roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary. If you must be on the roads, exercise extreme caution and stay alert to your surroundings.
  • Use safe approved heating methods to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning or fire hazards. Reminder: Ovens are not recommended to be utilized to assist in heating a home. Gas ovens create a greater carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens create greater fire hazard when on for long periods of time.
  • Prepare for extreme cold and wind chills by ensuring proper insulation of outdoor piping and/or areas where cold drafts allow colder air into your home and having emergency supplies on hand. Consider keeping faucets on a slow drip to help prevent pipes from freezing.
