Patrons of Sweet Girlz Creamery & Bakery in the Myrtle Beach area are probably familiar with their ice cream flavors and hot dogs.

The beachside location located at 9619 Shore Drive recently closed for the summer season, according to a Facebook post, but the location’s owners have something else planned for this fall.

Sweet Girlz Bakery & Cafe is set to open this October and will be located at 4007 Highway 17 South in North Myrtle Beach at the Windy Hill Center next to the Harley Davidson store.

The new location is run by married couple Kari and Vicki Alvaro. The pair own a bakery in Easton, Pa. called Sweet Girlz Bakery which opened in 2011. When they moved to the Grand Strand, they opened the ice cream place to “get their feet wet.”

“I started taking up bakery orders because we were finding that there was a lot of tourism coming down that needed a birthday cake or a wedding cake or something,” Kari said. “What started out as maybe one or two a month quickly blossom to five to 10 a weekend.”

Now, with a fully-fledged bakery, Sweet Girlz Bakery & Cafe will have custom cakes, pastries, cupcakes, bagels, bread and other baked goods as staples.

One of these is crumb cake, akin to coffee cake with sugary crumbs on top. Customers can get crumb cake in blueberry, apple cinnamon or vanilla cinnamon flavor, Kari said.

The bakery will also serve breakfast and lunch items. Breakfast sandwiches and omelets will be on the menu, Kari added. Sweet Girlz will also have a $5 breakfast with two eggs, a choice of meat, toast and potatoes between 7-9 a.m.

Sweet Girlz is also bringing several Pa. staples to the Grand Strand. One is “Scrapple”. Like livermush, Scrapple is made from leftover pork with cornmeal and spices, its final state being meatloaf-like.

“It’s probably not good for you but it tastes really good,” Kari added.

Philly cheesesteaks with cheese whiz will also be at Sweet Girlz. Kari stressed these cheesesteaks will be “real” and authentic to Philadelphia.

“We don’t put peppers on Philly cheese steaks in Philly,” Kari Alvaro said.

The new bakery comes as a growing trend emerges is emerging in the Grand Strand. Several Italian bakeries and world-inspired have announced they’re open recently. Rita’s, an Italian Ice eatery native to Pennsylvania, also opened a location in North Myrtle Beach.

Kari Alvaro said the recent trend indicates a wave of people from northern states moving to the Grand Strand.

“It’s a nicer area for us northerners to come to,” Kari Alvaro said. “The taxes are better cost of living is lower, and it’s just a nicer, easier, stressless way of life.”

Sweet Girlz is also one of several LGBTQ-friendly businesses in the Myrtle Beach area.
