More road work on busy stretch of Myrtle Beach highway. Will it affect drivers?
Drivers along U.S. 17 in Myrtle Beach are seeing additional construction as crews continue work to widen the bypass near the Myrtle Beach International Airport.
Crews are currently installing storm drainage in the existing grass median along the highway in preparation for the upcoming expansion, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said in a Facebook post.
The drainage work is not expected to cause any delays for drivers, according to SCDOT Program Manager Marla Watson.
The stretch of busy highway next to Fred Nash Boulevard is being widened from four lanes to six, and will include new turn lanes and a concrete barrier wall to separate traffic. The project, which began more than a year ago, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, Watson said.
The project is currently on time, Watson said.
The improvements to U.S. 17 Bypass will happen in both southbound and northbound lanes from S.C. 707 to Shetland Lane in Horry County.
The $19.3 million project is an effort to increase the road’s capacity, which is one of the major highways used by drivers in Myrtle Beach.
