Horry County under winter storm warning. The latest snow updates in Myrtle Beach area
A winter weather event is descending onto the Grand Strand.
Early on Tuesday morning, the clouds above Myrtle Beach were light gray and low, a sign that snow might be in the area’s future.
This will be the first snowfall to hit northeastern South Carolina and coastal North Carolina so far this winter.
An email update from the National Weather Service’s Meteorologist-in-Charge Steven Pfaff at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday said snow probabilities have increased for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Snow is expected to start in the Myrtle Beach area between 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, with the worst snowfall happening between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the NWS’s latest forecast said. Snowfall will most likely end between 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Myrtle Beach currently has a 60% chance of getting one inch of snow and a 33% chance of getting two inches of snow, predictions from Pffaf’s office show.
As of Tuesday morning’s forecast, North Myrtle Beach has a 64% chance of one inch of snowfall and a 41% chance of two inches of snow.
Horry County is under a winter weather warning due to the impending storm, with a winter storm warning in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday through 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The NWS also warned of hazardous travel on roads for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Pfaff and his team at the NWS station in Wilmington, NC said there is now also a 20% likelihood of freezing rain or ice on Thursday. The exact amounts of freezing rain are still unclear.
For the rest of the week, temperatures are expected to remain “abnormally cold,” according to Pfaff.
In preparation for the weather events this week, Horry County announced early on Tuesday morning that Horry County Emergency Management Department will be at OPCON 2, Level 2 Operating Condition, on Tuesday as of 8 a.m., an email from the county said.
This means that the county is operating in a heightened state of awareness, with emergency plans beginning to be implemented, according to the email.
