Northern SC, coastal NC prepare for potential 1st snow. What forecast says to expect
For the first time this winter, the Grand Strand beaches could experience a dusting of snow.
According to a brief from the National Weather Service station in Wilmington, N.C., there are chances of snowfall in the region for late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
“Amounts are expected to be light but could still pose hazardous travel issues,” the NWS Monday morning briefing said about Tuesday night’s snowfall.
Inland areas are expected to have the least amount of snow accumulation at less than one inch, with approximately one to two inches expected further east towards the coast. The NWS said the North Carolina coast could see as much as 3 inches of snow on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
As of Monday morning, there’s a 39% chance Myrtle Beach could see an inch of snow during the storm, the forecast showed. Forecasters expect the abnormally cold temperatures in the region to continue today, and potentially linger throughout the remainder of this week.
There’s also an increasing threat for “additional wintry precipitation” late Wednesday through Thursday night, the brief said. At this point, the exact amounts of snow and ice are uncertain.
Northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina have warnings for a moderate impact of hazardous travel overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, the NWS said in their Monday morning briefing.
A cold weather advisory is also in effect in the region from Monday night into Tuesday.
