Suspect in deadly apartment shooting near CCU appears in Horry County court

A magistrate denied bond for a man suspected of murder in connection to a deadly shooting at an apartment near Coastal Carolina University.

Magistrate William Hutson told Jaquan Tyrell Nichols, 23, of Mullins, that only a Circuit Court judge judge could set bond on the murder charge. As a result, Nichols will remain in J. Reuben Long Detention Center until he next appears in an Horry County court.

Horry County police also charged Nichols with possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He faces life in prison if convicted.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Coastal Villas apartments off S.C. Highway 544.

The Horry County Coroner’s office identified Timothy Davis, 29, as the murder victim.

Davis’ mother was not at the hearing, but a victim’s advocate said the mother described the murder as a “senseless act.” Davis’ 12-year-old son was taking his dad’s death hard, the advocate said.

Horry County police also charged Nichols with unlawful carrying of a handgun and possession of a stolen handgun after a traffic stop on Tuesday. The gun was reportedly stolen in Conway, according to a police report.
