10-year-old ran away to report being sexually abused, says mom didn’t stop attack: report

A 10-year-old ran away from home to call the police to inform them she was sexually abused and her mother did not stop the illegal activity, according to a police report.

Police charged a 52-year-old man on Friday in connection to the abuse.

On Oct. 29, officers responded to a U.S. Highway 501 Scotchman near Conway for a 10-year-old girl who called 911 to say she ran away from home because she was afraid.

The girl said a person sexually touched her on several occasions during the last two years, according to a police report. The girl said she told her mom about the incidents, but she did not stop it.

The victim said she was scared to be around the person and feels afraid, the report states. She added that she decided to run away and call 911 for help.

Officers say five other children, aged between 1 year old to 15 years old, lived in the victim’s home. The children were taken from the home while the S.C. Department of Social Services investigated, the report states.

Horry County police charged Stephen Kelly Bush with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor in connection to the abuse. He was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center and is being held without bail.

Bush faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
