Update: Four-car crash results in one dead, 2 others injured in third traffic fatality since Sunday
A four-vehicle car crash Monday night on U.S. 701, near Conway, resulted in the death of a moped driver and two others were injured, according to Lance Cpl. Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
This recent death is the second traffic fatality to occur Monday, and the third within the past two days, according to authorities.
The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. near 6670 U.S. 701 N., and the driver of a Tao-brand moped, James Jarrett, 37, of Conway, was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple traumas, Darris Fowler, deputy coroner with Horry County, said. Jarrett was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Fowler said.
The victim was traveling southbound on U.S. 701 when the victim crossed over into the northbound lane and was struck head-on by the 64-year-old driver of a 2007 Chevy sports utility vehicle.
The SUV overturned and crossed over into the southbound lane and was then struck by a 2001 Dodge.
A 1993, four-door Lexus then struck the SUV and the 2001 Dodge, Jones said.
The 64-year-old driver of the SUV was seriously injured and taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the 2001 Dodge was injured and taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, but the nature of the driver’s injuries was unknown, Jones said.
The driver of the 1993 Lexus was uninjured.
Authorities responded to another fatality earlier Monday and were also called about a traffic-related death on Sunday.
A 19-year-old Virginia man died early Monday when he was involved in a motorcycle crash in the Myrtle Beach area, according to officials.
Stephen Agnew Jr., 19, of Farmville, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight Monday at 3101 S. Kings Highway, which is near the front gate of the former Air Force base. He died from injuries he suffered when his sport motorcycle crashed into another motorcycle, Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said.
A pedestrian was also killed Sunday night in the Myrtle Beach area when the person was hit by a vehicle, according to authorities.
Luis Martinez, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash about 11 p.m. Sunday from multiple trauma, said Willard.
Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol said troopers are investigating the crash that happened at 10:55 p.m. Sunday on Shetland Lane, which is located off U.S. 17 Bypass near the Myrtle Beach International Airport.
A 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling East on Shetland Lane when it struck the pedestrian, who was in the roadway, Collins said.
“It does not appear that any charges will be filed as it appears the pedestrian was in the roadway illegally,” Collins said.
More details will be released as information becomes available.
