Following TGI Fridays bankruptcy and subsequent restaurant closings in the Myrtle Beach area, a local chain has plans to move into the former Murrells Inlet location.

El Cerro Grande bought the former TGI Fridays property at the end of 2024, land records show. The Mexican restaurant intends to move its Murrells Inlet location across the highway into the empty building, said two employees.

The owner of El Cerro Grande did not respond to a request to comment before publication. It’s unclear why the restaurant is switching locations.

El Cerro Grande first opened in North Myrtle Beach in 1991 and has expanded to eight locations spanning across the Grand Strand. The brand is also working with Neal and Pam’s in Surfside to open Sloppy Jose’s Cantina and Seafood Grill at the MarshWalk, The Sun News previously reported.

TGI Fridays filed for bankruptcy in November 2024 after closing a large number of restaurants across the country. This included several Myrtle Beach area locations, The Sun News reported.
