A zipline course on the site of the former Pavilion in downtown Myrtle Beach quietly closed in January 2024, and it’s unclear why.
Myrtle Beach Zipline Adventures announced its permanent closure on Facebook Jan. 18. The post did not say why the zipline was closing.
The final owner was The Lodges at Banning Mills Retreat, a nonprofit in Whitesburg, Georgia, according to Mark Kruea, director of public information for the city of Myrtle Beach.
The Lodges at Banning Mills Retreat could not be reached for comment before publication, but the zipline’s operator has changed hands multiple times since opening in 2012.
Eric McGee, who The Sun News reported in 2017 as operating the zipline, ceased leasing the land for the business from property owners Burroughs & Chapin in 2020. McGee, who also operates Jet Boat Rides at Broadway at the Beach, said the zipline business was not satisfactory and was never part of the long-term vision for the property.
“It did not meet our expectations,” McGee said March 1 in an interview with The Sun News.
