Developers for a 171.77 acre housing project in the Carolina Forest area have withdrawn their rezoning request, according to the Horry County Planning Commission.

The proposal would have allowed developers to build more than 550 single-family homes in the last 18 holes of the River Oaks Golf Course, which left residents frustrated.

The Horry County Planning Commission announced Wednesday that the developer, Diamond Shores LLC, had withdrawn the rezoning request and the development agreement.

The land is currently zoned for residential housing, so development on the land could still happen in the future.

Horry Councilman Dennis DiSabato, whose district covers Carolina Forest, announced earlier that he would vote against the rezoning if it went to vote.
