The owners of a Carolina Forest golf course plan to rezone the remaining 18 holes into a community of about 500 homes.

MyHorryNews reported that Horry County officials posted signs earlier this month announcing that the owners of the River Oaks Golf Course would seek a rezoning request for 175 acres.

The Horry County Planning Commission expects the landowner to request a deferral at the next planning meeting, meaning the commission won’t take the project up until it’s Oct. 6 meeting, according to the MyHorryNews article.

Although the landowners could develop more housing with current zoning, a zoning change is necessary for the smaller lots planned.

The development plans show about 172 acres and will accommodate 505 single-family units that are about 6,000 square feet. Included in the plans are increased open space, a community garden and sidewalks.

In 2018, the course’s owners removed nine holes to make room for residential development.

The golf course is located at 831 River Oaks Drive.
