Construction of Surfside Beach pier is coming along. Here’s what to know
The construction of the fishing pier in Surfside Beach is expected to be completed next season and should be walkable in July despite numerous hiccups with materials, project officials said Tuesday.
The town’s pier was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The project will cost about $20 million, according to WBTW-TV.
“If we finish early — we need to because everything’s going up.” said John O’ Brien, president of Consensus Construction, according to WBTW. “So our intent is to have not a contractual substantial completion in the summertime, but a pier that you can walk on in the summertime.”
O’Brien said the podium is finished and the trestle is 70% done.
Construction began on the new pier in December 2020 after a series of delays. The pier will be raised 10 feet higher, providing more protection from storm surges.
