Child ‘violently shook’ at Myrtle Beach daycare, suit says

A child was violently shaken at a Myrtle Beach daycare and faces difficulties because of his injuries, a family alleges in a new lawsuit.

Shauna Campbell, whose child was hurt, filed the suit in Horry County court this week. The filing names Lona Thomas, Busy Bodies Day Care and Gladys Knuesel as defendants.

Knuesel owns the daycare and Thomas worked at the facility. Police charged Thomas with child abuse resulting in great bodily injury in connection to the 2019 case. She awaits trial in her case.

The parent left her 7-month-old son at Busy Bodies on Nov. 1, 2019, the lawsuit states.

Around 4:30 p.m, Busy Bodies called the parent to say something was wrong with the child and he was going to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, the suit states.

Hospital staff was told the child suffered a choking incident, but initial tests were inconclusive to the baby’s condition, according to the suit. A few days later, while in the hospital, the baby started to have seizures.

The baby was transferred to the Medical University of South Carolina, where doctors determined the victim’s injuries were most likely caused by an adult who “violent shook” the baby, the suit claims.

The victim has not met numerous development milestones, the suit states, and will continue to suffer from physical and mental injuries.

Busy Bodies and its staff were negligent in several different ways, including failing to train employees and failure to provide the proper aid to help the reported choking. The suit asks for an unspecified amount of money.

Officials from Busy Bodies did not respond in time for this report.
