‘I’m here to do the right thing’: How a Myrtle Beach shop owner is aiding cancer patients

Hairdresser Sherry Lopez is looking to exercise her three decades of experience by restoring confidence to those suffering from hair loss.

Lopez opened Beleza Hair and Wig Salon last month at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. Her shop specializes in providing professional wig services to those with cancer and alopecia experiencing hair loss.

“It’s so rewarding when I work with a cancer patient and I’m able to buzz their hair off and then fit them properly for a wig,” said Lopez, who relocated to Myrtle Beach after working as a hairdresser in Greenville for more than 30 years. “It’s a very traumatic time in their life and this is my way of being able to give back.”

With a vast knowledge in the side effects of chemotherapy, she said she wanted to separate herself from traditional hair styling and open a salon that focused solely on fitting clients with the best possible wig as they navigate their way through a difficult time. Improving outer beauty heals inner beauty, Lopez said.

But the shop, located on Howard Ave., isn’t limited to those with cancer.

With a large selection of real hair, synthetic and heat-defiant wigs on display, Lopez said she has clients fill out a form outlining their illness or why they’re losing their hair to properly determine what kind of wig to recommend. Providing proper wig styling, tailoring and storage, she also bases wig selection on a person’s skin tone, eye color, style and face shape.

Additionally, she will shave a client’s hair and ensure they remain clean shaven for as long as treatment is being received and the wig is needed.

“If they leave happy and they have a smile on their face, then I’ve done my job,” Lopez said. “I’m not here just to sell wigs, I’m here to do the right thing.”
