Off the Beaten Path: Have you visited these restaurants, stores around Horry County?
The coastal areas of Myrtle Beach are known for seafood spots with great waterfront views, skylines of resorts and, of course, many flashy spots for tourists to visit.
But away from the bright lights and high-rises are longstanding, treasured restaurants and stores beloved by locals and those who pass through.
Here’s a dive into communities throughout Horry County and a look at spots to find locals, grab a bite and fill up your tank.
A cross from Green Sea Floyds High School, Sugar Bears is a traditional country store with gas pumps outside. Tables line one wall near a short-order grill where folks stop in for lunch. Bayboro Clover Farm nearby on Green Sea Road is a similar spot with its country-store and hometown feel.
Off the beaten path and down a country road in the Aynor area, you can find Radd Dew’s Bar-B-Que, which is located in the old Horry schoolhouse. The restaurant is a family owned and operated barbecue buffet, according to it’s Facebook page. It’s also known for catering for parties and weddings.
Ned’s right in the heart Aynor, known for its burgers, has a letter-board menu full of meals from hamburger steak to a flounder sandwich. You can find a snack or meal special at Ned’s Monday through Saturday at its location on North Main Street.
About 30 minutes slightly northwest, Shorty’s Grill in Loris is nothing short of a family owned, home-cookin’ spot. The restaurant, at 4115 Meeting St., offers homemade burgers, fresh fries, breakfast and chicken bog Thursdays.
Just a short walk a few blocks away, you’ll find Isaac Brown Restaurant, at 4131 Maple St. in downtown Loris, which has a menu full of country cooking from pork chops to cornbread to collard greens. If the light’s on, they’re open.
Historic Conway has it’s share of well-known choice restaurants.
But if you’re in the mood for pizza in a laid-back atmosphere, Three Guys Subs and Pies in the Conway area was started by three brothers in 1997, according to the restaurant’s website. Its menu features wings, pasta, subs and New York-style pizzas.
The longtime spot Donzelle’s Restaurant in downtown Conway is the place to grab a meat and three. Since 1962, the restaurant has served up soul food to the Conway community, and it’s a go-to place for collard greens, lunch specials and to visit with locals. Donzelle’s is open weekdays from 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Over in North Myrtle Beach Hoskins Restaurant was established in the 1940s, and it’s menu is full of home-cooked specials - from seafood to hushpuppies to fried chicken. The Ocean Drive restaurant is located right on Main Street and open Tuesday through Sunday.
R.W. Wood’s General Store in Little River is known for its breakfast and lunch. Located on Sea Mountain Highway, breakfast specials include biscuits and gravy, home fries, eggs and bacon, and for lunch, and the store is always serving up chili dogs.
And, last but not least, the Galivants Ferry Convenience Store is one of the last stops right before leaving Horry County. The gas stop and convenience store is your one-stop shop on U.S. 501 heading toward Marion County.
