Off the Beaten Path: Zodiacs, presidents and farm life share a common Horry County thread
It’s common for neighborhood developers to name the roads using a certain theme, like trees, past presidents or colors.
Across Horry County there are new and old neighborhoods, and some under construction. But what themes have been used on roads around the Grand Strand?
Here is a look at motifs used in neighborhoods and how some of these roads received the names.
One of the oldest neighborhoods in Myrtle Beach is Pine Lakes Country Club. Poinsett and Calhoun roads, which lead to a roundabout where the Ocean Forest Hotel once stood, are named after Revolutionary War and South Carolina figures, said local historian and Horry County Registrar Marion Foxworth. Calhoun Road is named after former Vice President John C. Calhoun and Poinsett Road is named after Joel Robert Poinsett, ambassador to Mexico, who brought poinsettias to the United States for the first time, Foxworth said.
Other roads named after state figures include Sumter Drive, Marion Circle, Pinckney Avenue and Springs Avenue.
Just south of the City of Myrtle Beach is a mobile home neighborhood with its streets named after zodiac signs. Crystal Lake Mobile Home Village has roads with names like Leo Drive, Virgo Lane, as well as names after mythical creatures and constellations.
A bit further south in the Garden City area is the resort community Oceanside Village, with roads named after different birds: Avocet Drive, Bittern Drive and Jacana Drive.
On the north end of the Grand Strand, roads are named after cities and states on the East coast. A neighborhood near Arcadian Shores in the North Myrtle Beach area has nearly two dozen streets running parallel to one another with names like Delaware Trail, Memphis Trail, Charlotte Trail and Miami Trail.
The Farm at Carolina Forest is more of a well-known neighborhood with roads dubbed after a scarecrow, windmill, picket fence, a barn owl and a red rooster.
