Feds announce grant to help Coastal Carolina University after Hurricane Florence

Carolina Carolina University is getting help from the feds to help cover costs associated with Hurricane Florence.

Officials closed CCU ahead of the hurricane’s arrival in 2018 and remained shutdown for weeks as floodwaters made travel into Horry County difficult. The storm impacted class schedules and required special accommodations for sports teams.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced on Thursday that more than $420,000 in grant funds will be given to the university to cover a variety of expenses incurred as a result of the storm. The money comes from a special fund to reimburse high education institutions in the wake of a disaster.

“We know that full recovery from natural disasters, such as Hurricane Florence, can be a long and difficult process for everyone involved,” DeVos said in a release.

The university can use the funds to help cover salaries, equipment purchases, and assist students who suffered financially from the storm, including students at risk of homelessness.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster thanked DeVos, the Department of Education for supporting South Carolina and CCU.
