Coronavirus live updates for March 28: Here’s the latest in the Myrtle Beach area

The City of Myrtle Beach reversed its decision to close golf courses, and voted Friday night to prohibit commercial activity on the beach during the coronavirus pandemic.

Jet Ski rentals, beach umbrella and chair rentals, and banana boat rentals are temporarily prohibited along the beach in the City of Myrtle Beach.

The city initially voted Thursday to close golf courses, but amended its ordinance Friday night.

Here are the latest updates on the coronavirus along the Grand Strand on March 28.

Horry County has 24 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, as of Saturday morning, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. There has been one coronavirus-related death in the county.

The number of cases in South Carolina has reached at least 539, with 13 deaths.

Hotel owners along the Grand Strand reacted to the forced closure of their facilities. Here’s the latest.

The City of Myrtle Beach, City of North Myrtle Beach and Horry County have put a hold on accommodation services across the region.

Those spending time in Myrtle Beach are asked to leave as officials voted to shut down hotels and attractions Thursday. North Myrtle Beach City Council passed an ordinance Thursday prohibiting short-term rentals starting Friday through April 30. Horry County Council voted in an unannounced meeting Thursday to close hotels, public and private campgrounds, mini golf courses, golf car rentals, theaters and amusement parks in all unincorporated areas.

  • DHEC released a breakdown of positive coronavirus cases by zip code. Myrtle Beach zip codes 29577 and 29588 had the highest number of cases in the county.

  • South Carolina state parks are closed through April. Parks impacted along the Grand Strand include Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park.

  • Horry County led the state in the most unemployment claims due to the coronavirus outbreak. In the last week, more than 5,000 Horry County residents applied for unemployment benefits, according to information from the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce.

  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe is donating 100,000 smoothies across the country to healthcare workers and first responders, according to a release Saturday.

  • South Carolina received its second shipment of personal protective equipment from the Strategic National Stockpile, according to a DHEC release. Horry County received more than 2,500 N95 respirators, 6,000 masks, 3,000 gloves, more than 1,000 face shields, nearly 1,000 surgical gowns and several coveralls, DHEC reports.
