‘Pretty generic-looking guy’ Quigley has been extraordinary for Minnesota Vikings
Ryan Quigley is a “pretty generic-looking guy,” he told one news outlet.
However, as a story by the Brainerd (Minn.) Dispatch reports, the Little River native has been anything but ordinary for the Minnesota Vikings this season.
Through two-plus weeks, Quigley is sixth in the NFL in net punting average at 44.0 yards.
However, the North Myrtle Beach High product is 24th in yardage per punt at 43.9 yards.
But as he told the Brainerd Dispatch, placement is his biggest weapon.
“I’d say I’m more on the throwback side of things,” Quigley told the news outlet. “I’m not going to be (Oakland’s) Marquette King or some of those other guys that bomb it 60-some yards. I can hit big balls when needed, say if we’re backed up in the end zone. For us, the goal is just hitting consistently, staying away from those big misses and putting the ball where it needs to be put.”
He also credited the men who help keep returners from big gains after the football leaves his foot.
“The biggest thing is our gunners” who cover the punts, Quigley told the Brainerd Dispatch. “We have incredible gunners.”
Quigley did caution in the interview that it has been just two games, but at least the undrafted punter out of Boston College is on the right track.
“It’s only two games, but if you talk to me at the end of the season, and we’re doing (44.0 net), that will be all right,” Quigley told the Brainerd Dispatch.
