Myrtle Beach Speedway sets date for return to racing following coronavirus hiatus
Ladies and gentlemen, you can soon restart your engines.
Myrtle Beach Speedway announced Friday evening that it has gotten clearance to return to racing later this month.
“With the recent approval from county and state officials, Myrtle Beach Speedway is planning to get back on track May 23rd,” MBS stated in a Facebook post. “The race event will mark the first event back at the track since the recent hiatus due to COVID-19.”
Track officials announced March 24 that it was postponing its events, including weekly racing and the Horry County Fair, and since has pushed events back further due to the coronavirus pandemic.
NASCAR announced it would return to the track May 17 at Darlington Raceway.
Racing May 23 will include the following series: Late Models, Chargers, Super Trucks and Vintage. Mini-stocks will not run as they will defer to the Carolina Mini Stock Challenge at Dillon Motor Speedway that same day, according to Myrtle Beach Speedway.
MBS’s Facebook post mentions fans’ safety but did not specify whether they would be allowed at the races right away or what specific precautions would be in place if they could attend. Attempts to reach Myrtle Beach Speedway General Manager Steve Zacharias were not immediately successful Friday.
“Speedway management will be in close contact with the CDC and state health coordinators to ensure that we follow all the necessary guidelines,” the Facebook post states. “The health and safety for all fans, competitors, and our staff will be the priority moving forward.”
The social media post did indicate further details will be forthcoming.
“As we near closer to our return date, we will be sure to update everyone with special announcements regarding the event as well as precautions we will have to follow,” the Facebook post states.
Dillon Motor Speedway announced via Facebook that it has gotten clearance to return to racing and has an event scheduled for this weekend.
