Carolina Forest running back Dyverse Simmons (28) looks for extra yardage against North Myrtle Beach. For The Sun News

Game of the week

Myrtle Beach (2-2) at Conway (4-1)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: The Seahawks come into the Victory Bell game having won seven of the past eight in the series. But not since before Everett Golson’s emergence at Myrtle Beach has Conway been so favored. The Tigers’ offense is putting up 38.4 points per game, second in the area, while also possessing a stout defense that has given up an average of roughly 11 points per game to teams not named Hartsville. In many regards, the two numbers go hand-in-hand. Conway’s ability to overwhelm defenses early has forced opponents to throw the ball more than they might have hoped or needed. In this case, that could spell doom for Myrtle Beach. The Seahawks have had little success throwing the ball so far this year, having thrown for a light-by-comparison 536 yards while tallying twice as many interceptions (six) to touchdowns (three).

Players to watch

Darren Stanley/Juwan Moody

School: Conway

Class: Junior/Sophomore

Position: Receivers

The scoop: So much attention is being paid to senior Bryan Edwards, and for good reason. The top-flight receiver is putting up huge numbers and is a threat to score on every play. What that’s also doing is opening up some opportunities for the school’s other receivers. Both Darren Stanley and Juwan Moody have the speed to be considered home-run threats on every snap. Stanley has 10 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Moody had five catches for 121 yards and four scores. If either or both are ignored, they’ll do some damage.

Game setups

St. James (2-2) at Socastee (1-4)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: For different reasons, each team’s victory last week was big. St. James had an impressive showing against an inferior Hannah-Pamplico squad that provided some much-needed rhythm for a team looking to finally make strides when region play begins next week. And for Socastee, the Braves needed to end what had been a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season. Socastee backup quarterback Hunter Illing had an impressive showing in the win over North Myrtle Beach, throwing for 246 yards. It also appears the team’s best rushing threat, Malachi McClendon, will be back in uniform this week after missing the win over North Myrtle Beach with a sprained ankle.

Carolina Forest (3-2) at Lexington (3-1)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: Carolina Forest is going to be facing much of the same cast of characters that helped deliver a 49-19 thumping at home a year ago. Lexington running back Slade Carroll – who rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the game last season – is back for the Wildcats. So far, he’s got 380 yards and five scores in 2015. Meanwhile, receiver Jayson Hopper is also a name the Panthers’ coaches would rather not see again. He put up 123 yards and four touchdowns last year. This season, he’s looking just as strong for a Lexington team that pulled off a lopsided win over previously unbeaten, statewide top-10 Westwood last week.

Georgetown (3-1) at Loris (2-2)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: Georgetown’s “muck it up” approach to games looks to be something of the past. The Bulldogs have all of a sudden developed into a squad that has scored at least 34 points in three consecutive games. To think of how rare that is, Georgetown had put up three 30-point games in a single season just twice during during the first five years of Bradley Adams’ tenure. Finding out where all these points is coming from isn’t difficult. Quarterback Jarvis Brown is third in the area is passing yards (736) with six touchdowns. He’s also run for 206 yards and five more touchdowns. Essentially, Adams has cut Brown loose, and the payoff has been noticeable.

Lake View (2-2) at Aynor (3-1)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: Aynor comes into this game as the top-scoring team on the Grand Strand. The Blue Jackets and their “hammer” offense are putting up an average of 43 points per game, courtesy of approximately 337 yards each week. But to think any of that is going to scare off a Lake View team that has already played two of the state’s best small-class teams this year would be insane. Last week, the Wild Gators suffered a 36-30 loss to Lamar, and they’ve also already taken on Dillon. Just for good measure, Lake View is coming off a trip to the Class A, Division II title game. “They say they’re down there,” Aynor coach Jody Jenerette said. “But they’re never down.”

C.E. Murray (4-1) at Carvers Bay (1-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

The game: In five games all time against C.E. Murray, Carvers Bay has had five easy wins. The Bears have walked away with an average margin of victory of 36 points against the War Eagles. Athleticism is usually a big reason why. As far as this year, it appears Murray may have its best shot yet to finally get into the win column against Carvers Bay. But while the records between these two teams look very different, so, too, does their strengths of schedule. The Bears have played four teams from larger classes, and their best showing yet came a week ago against a very good Georgetown team that appears to be a playoff-quality team in Class AAA.

Area rankings

BIG CLASS

1

Conway: For the first time in years, someone other than Myrtle Beach owns this top spot.

2

Carolina Forest: Panthers have started to show how high ceiling can be when playing well.

3

Myrtle Beach: Difficult non-region schedule not resulting in as many wins as normal.

SMALL CLASS

1

Loris: Rested Lions welcome in a Georgetown team on a three-game winning streak.

2

Aynor: Hard to argue with so many players able to run the ball successfully.

3

Waccamaw: Warriors are a different team with Kevin Gasque and Kelton Grant healthy.
