Letter | Unlimited hospitality, opportunities bring couple to Myrtle Beach every winter

As a Canadian Snowbird, I wish to express my strong disagreement with the sentiments expressed by June Kowalczyk in the March 29 edition.

The Grand Strand has been a wonderful place to escape winter for my wife and me for the last 10 years. The area offers retirees unlimited opportunities for education, entertainment, golf, and very affordable eateries.

The beautiful coast and its wide beaches makes each trip to the beach a unique experience no matter what the weather. For us, we are especially appreciative of the openness and welcoming experiences offered by Coastal Carolina University.

Whether it be the large number of courses offered by the Life Long Learning program, the musical and dramatic performances by the students and faculty, or the excitement of watching a very good basketball team compete, we, as snowbirds, are welcomed and encourage to participate.

Most of all we appreciate the southern hospitality afforded to us no matter where we go. Locals are wonderfully welcoming and kind in virtually all situations. Unfortunately, for those of us from large urban areas in the north or Canada, we rarely are treated with such attention and kindness at home.

Unlike Ms. Kowalczyk, I have praised the Grand Strand to all my Canadian friends for 10 years, and I will continue to do so.

Thanks to all of you for making our winter the best time of the year.

The writer lives in Myrtle Beach during his winter visits.
