Here’s what you need to know about Horry County bridges during Hurricane Ian
Horry County roadways are already experiencing some wind as Hurricane Ian is predicted to make landfall in the area tomorrow.
Driving over bridges during harsh winds can be dangerous and during Hurricane Ian, driving over them is not advisable, but will they be able to withstand the tropical storm?
Mark Kruea, a public information officer for the city of Myrtle Beach said that he has not heard that there are any concerns about the bridges amid the storm. “They should be find,” he said.
According to the county’s website, there are 72 bridges in Horry County.
The oldest two, Dick Pond Road Bridge and Sea Mountain Highway Bridge, were built in 1935, according to this historic bridge website. It is unclear whether either bridge has any reported recent issues.
“When the wind sustains 25 miles an hour, a movable bridge is locked down. What that means is it’s open to vehicle traffic, but it won’t be open for boats or nautical traffic,” said Pete Poore, director of communications for the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
Currently, the SCDOT has not reported any bridge closures in preparation for the hurricane.
