Dangerous heat wave with ‘extreme’ temps forecast in South Carolina
Northeastern coastal South Carolina is expecting another extreme heat wave through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
A Thursday morning forecast said that heat advisories possible from Friday onward for heat indices of 105 degrees or greater.
Over the weekend, “extreme heat warnings’ are possible, meaning the heat index could be as hot as 110 degrees or greater.
NWS meteorologist Rachel Zouzias said the heat index temperature “combines the temperature and the moisture.”
The weekend heat wave could peak on either Monday or Sunday based on current forecasts, Zouzias said. Inland areas will experience higher temperatures compared to the coast.
“What happens is high pressure in the upper atmosphere creates an increase in heat, and that’s what’s going to happen this weekend,” she said. “That looks to be stronger than the last heat wave we had.”
The Myrtle Beach area was also under an extreme heat advisory last weekend with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees.
These hot temperatures accompanied with humidity may cause heat related-illnesses, the advisory said.
Heavy sweating, rapid heart rate, nausea, muscle cramps, headache, confusion and dizziness are all signs of heat sickness, according to previous Sun News reporting.
