Myrtle Beach is under a heat advisory due to extreme temps. Here’s for how long

National Weather Service

A heat advisory has been issued for the Myrtle Beach area, with forecasted heat indexes that could go above 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and projected that heat index values could reach up to 109 degrees.

According to meteorologist Carl Morgan, inland communities, such as Conway, are expected to have higher temperatures than the coastline.

“Not too much is going to change through the weekend,” Morgan said. “If anything, we could be a degree or two warmer Saturday and Sunday.”

These hot temperatures accompanied with humidity may cause heat related-illnesses, the advisory said.

Heavy sweating, rapid heart rate, nausea, muscle cramps, headache, confusion and dizziness are all signs of heat sickness, according to previous Sun News reporting.

The NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioning if possible or finding cool shaded areas if outside.

Morgan said the Myrtle Beach area is also under a moderate rip current risk, meaning that there is a higher likelihood for rip currents in the ocean over the weekend.

He recommends remaining aware of the elevated risk and “swimming near lifeguards.”
