Latest storm Jerry offshore of Carolinas. How will it impact Myrtle Beach area?

It’s been two years since the Myrtle Beach area experienced coastal flooding, but with Tropical Storm Jerry churning offshore the Carolinas, that could change this weekend.

There is a chance for moderate coastal flooding on Thursday and Friday in Myrtle Beach and along the coast, said meteorologist Victoria Oliva with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The area is already dealing with king tides, and additional flooding could increase by 8.5 feet by Friday, Oliva said.

“Tides are already above normal,” Oliva said, “(this will make) it a little bit worse than typical.”

While Jerry is far enough in the Atlantic for a direct impact, it will bring gusty winds, rain and hazardous marine conditions, Oliva said.

The Myrtle Beach area can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain and 30 to 35 mph winds on Friday and Saturday. There also may be a gale warning and high surf advisory issued, Oliva said.
