Law Enforcement in Horry County, SC, has taken to social media to urge residents to stay off the roads unless it’s an emergency because there is black ice.
On Thursday afternoon, Horry County Schools announced they will have another eLearning day on Friday due to the unsafe icy roads. All extracurricular activities scheduled for Friday will be rescheduled, an email from HCS spokesperson Lisa Bourcier said.
“After a survey of our secondary roadways, we found that ice patches remain in shady areas and on less traveled roads. The parking lots at the schools also remain icy,” her email said. “While most of the main thoroughfares are passable, it is unsafe for school buses to travel on the secondary roads tomorrow morning.”
Schools will reopen on Monday, she wrote.
Temperatures on Wednesday night into Thursday morning only worsened road conditions, with melted snow refreezing into ice.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC has put the area under a Cold Weather Advisory until 10 a.m. on Thursday. With the wind chill, forecasters said some areas could get as cold as 11 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to continue to rise over the weekend, with the forecast showing above-freezing lows early into next week.

The three largest municipalities in Horry County, including the county itself, all remain closed as the south deals with the fallout of record-breaking snow and freezing temperatures.
The City of Myrtle Beach, Horry County, and the City of North Myrtle Beach all sent out releases saying they will remain closed on Thursday and will decide, based on road conditions, if they will reopen again on Friday.
The county’s solid waste facilities, including landfill and recycling centers, are closed and all Parks & Recreation and Library programs scheduled for Thursday have been canceled.
Sanitation collection in North Myrtle Beach will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, and all city facilities, including the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center, J. Bryan Floyd Community Center, City Court, City Hall and the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex will be closed.
