Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Horry County as more rain heads for area

Editor’s note: This story was updated with new information about the arrival of storms in the Myrtle Beach area, which were delayed to late afternoon and early evening.

Seriously? More storms?

Wasn’t it sunny Thursday morning?

Yep.

But storms will blow through Myrtle Beach one last time this week Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The chance of rain is 60%, with a mixture of lighter rain showers and thunderstorms.

  • The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central Horry County, southeastern Marion County and Brunswick County, N.C. until 5:15 p.m. Thursday.
  • Brunswick County is also under a marine warning until 5:30. Boaters and swimmers are recommended to stay out of the water.
  • A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion and Williamsburg counties until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Most of the rain is expected to fall in the late afternoon and early evening and shouldn’t measure more than about one-tenth of an inch, the NWS said. Expect a little bit of wind, including “gusts as high as 28 mph.” There’s also a slight chance of flooding in Georgetown County along the Santee River near Jamestown.

After the rain ends, however, most of the clouds will disappear, and the rest of the day will be rather sunny, with most everything clearing up by around 7 p.m., according to the NWS.

Grand Strand forecast this weekend

Thursday is the last bit of rain the beach will have for a while.

Starting Thursday evening through most of next week, it will be sunny (some clouds here and there) with highs in the upper 60s and mid 70s, according to the NWS. Lows at night will be in the 50s, except for Saturday and Sunday night, when it’ll get down to as low as 42.

On the days with highs below 70, it might be a little chilly at the beach with the sea breeze. Just stay in the sun. Don’t forget sunscreen!
