$4 million bond set for SC man just out of hospital, cops say. Here’s his charges
A man who was involved in a shootout with South Carolina deputies, where a police dog was injured, has been released from a hospital and taken to jail, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Jermaine Eric Halmon, a 45-year-old Orangeburg resident, spent 25 days in an area hospital after he was injured in the May 29 shootout where he fired at deputies, the sheriff’s office said Thursday in a news release.
Halmon was charged with three counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm Into an occupied vehicle, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and cruelty to a police K-9, according to the release.
Prior to being released from the hospital, Halmon was charged with DUI, driving under suspension, transporting alcohol in motor vehicle with seal broken, operating vehicle on highway without registration and license due to delinquency and an uninsured motor vehicle fee violation, Calhoun County court records show.
“I’m very glad that we’ve got him in jail,” Sheriff Thomas Summers said in the release. “My deputies were very lucky that they weren’t shot and injured but our K-9 was not as lucky. Halmon is where he needs to be.”
K-9 Angus has since returned home and is doing well after the bullets that struck him “miraculously missed all vital organs,” Summers said in a June 2 social media post.
On May 29, deputies found a man, later identified as Halmon, lying by a road after a car crash, according to the sheriff’s office. When a deputy began to investigate, Halmon fired shots and ran away from the area, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies, with the aid of Angus, pursued Halmon and exchanged gunfire with the Orangeburg man and wounded him, according to the sheriff’s office.
No other injuries were reported.
As the incident unfolded, a mud-covered man told Church Camp Road residents someone was trying to kill him, the office said. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the shooting, the sheriff’s department said.
“He was banging on doors, and we got a call from down there, and when one of the deputies confronted him, he shot at him ... and he ran off into the woods,’’ Summers previously said. “A canine unit came. The dog got a hold to him and he shot the dog, and then the deputies engaged him.’’
Halmon’s bond was set at $4,050,000 on the latest charges, the sheriff’s office said.
