Grand Strand Humane Society is without permanent home due to rodent infestation
Myrtle Beach is searching for a permanent home for the Grand Strand Humane Society after a rodent infestation left their facility uninhabitable.
“The rodents are gone, but damage to that building is too extensive to repair,” city spokesman Mark Kruea said in a news release. “Those funds will be better spent on a new location.”
The no-kill humane society moved to a suite on Tanger Outlets on Highway 501 in September from their previous home on Mr. Joe White Avenue. Kruea said Thursday he does not know if they will have to close temporarily or move to another location as they look for a new place, but it is likely they will not continue operating from the shopping venue, he added.
Officials with the humane society said they expected to be at the outlet for 60 days, while renovations were being completed, according to a September press release.
They had been in the facility for 20 years.
“It has been a true safe haven for tens of thousands of animals in need,” Amy Wingard, a spokesperson, said in the release.
Kennels are being sanitized for short term use to house shelter dogs, the press release states. They are expected to be finished by Nov. 1.
City officials encourage residents to contact Assistant City Manager Brian Tucker, if they have know of any properties that are available.
