A grandmother left a 9-month-old in a hot car for several hours, killing the infant, Texas police said.

The child was in a car seat in the backseat from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, when the grandmother found the child unresponsive in the hot car, Beeville Police said in a Facebook post.

The grandmother called 911 when she found the child, police told KRIS.

“Upon arrival, one of the officers made contact with the grandmother who was holding a 9-month-old child in her arms,” Beeville Assistant Police Chief Richard Cantu Jr. told KRIS.

Police said the death is being investigated as a homicide, but no charges have been filed. Charges are expected to be filed in the future, according to police.

Temperatures in Beeville reached 98 degrees on Aug. 21, according to AccuWeather.

Beeville is about a 100-mile drive southeast from San Antonio.
