7-year-old boy dies after getting hit by school bus that dropped him off, troopers say
A 7-year-old Louisiana boy was hit by a school bus after getting off to go home and later died, troopers said.
It happened at about 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, after Jeremiah Falgout and other students were dropped off along Louisiana Highway 665 in Montegut, according to Louisiana State Police.
The driver stopped and activated the bus’s flashing lights, authorities said.
“For reasons still under investigation, as the bus resumed its southbound route, Falgout was struck by the bus and sustained critical injuries,” troopers said in a news release.
Jeremiah was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries, troopers said.
He was a student at Montegut Elementary School, the Terrebonne Parish School District confirmed in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones in this difficult time,” the district said. “No words can truly express the sorrow and heartbreak felt in a moment like this.”
No one else was injured in the crash, according to troopers. The school bus driver, who wasn’t named, agreed to a breath test, which didn’t detect any alcohol.
Additional details weren’t released, but police said the investigation is ongoing.
Montegut is about a 70-mile drive southwest from New Orleans.
