Two teens are dead after their SUV veered off the road before crashing and sinking in a retention pond late Monday, May 30, Florida state troopers said.

The deadly crash occurred at 10:30 p.m. on Estancia Boulevard near San Romano Drive in Wesley Chapel, a suburb of Tampa, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 17-year-old male driver and his passenger, a 17-year-old female, were headed northbound on Estancia Boulevard when “for unknown reason,” he lost control of the 2003 Toyota Sequoia, troopers wrote in a report. The car veered onto the west shoulder and landed in a retention pond.

The vehicle was fully submerged, troopers said, and divers recovered the victims’ bodies hours later. Both were wearing seat belts, the report shows.

Authorities haven’t released the teens’ names.

Wesley Chapel is about 90 miles southwest of Orlando.
