Coach among 4 killed in wrong-way crash on way home from Mavericks game in Texas

Four people including a junior high school coach were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 45 before midnight on Sunday, May 22, Texas police told news outlets.

The coach was driving back home, along with students, after a Dallas Mavericks game, according to Palestine school district officials.

Another vehicle, traveling the wrong way, caused a head-on collision along I-45 near Wilmer, police told KTVT. A woman and two juveniles inside the other vehicle died, along with the coach.

The two students in the coach’s vehicle survived, KYTX reported. They are hospitalized in Dallas.

“Palestine ISD is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our educators, Michael Coyne, a teacher and coach at Palestine Junior High,” Palestine Independent School District said in a May 23 statement.

The students are hospitalized in Dallas.

“We extend our condolences to Coach Coyne’s family, friends and students,” the district said.

The district did not comment on the condition of the students.

Palestine is roughly 110 miles southeast of Dallas.
