11-year-old boy dies when car leaves road and plunges into canal, Louisiana police say

An 11-year-old Louisiana boy was killed when the car he was a passenger in plunged into a canal, police said.

On the night of Oct. 30, an 18-year-old driver and two passengers were traveling north on Louisiana Highway 946 in East Baton Rouge Parish in a 2006 Honda Pilot, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police.

The Honda “exited the roadway” and plunged into a bordering canal, according to police. Police said they have not determined what caused the Honda to leave the roadway.

One of the passengers, identified as 11-year-old Julian Jones, was seriously injured in the crash, police said.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to police. He was from Baton Rouge.

The other passenger “sustained moderate injuries” and was treated at a hospital, police said. The driver was not hurt.

Police said they don’t yet know if the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. They also took a “toxicology sample” from the driver for analysis.

The crash is still under investigation, police said. No other information had been released as of Oct. 31.
