Woman crossing 4-lane highway killed in hit-and-run crash in North Carolina, cops say
UPDATE: The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Thursday that 27-year-old Antwaun Thompson has been charged with felony hit and run. He is being held at the Lenoir County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond. The vehicle involved in the crash was located about 3 miles from the scene, highway patrol said.
ORIGINAL: A woman crossing a highway was killed in a hit-and-run Tuesday night in North Carolina, officials said.
Amy Jo Tyndall, 43, and another pedestrian were trying to cross North Carolina Highway 11 South near the intersection of Ashland Drive in Lenoir County around 10:30 p.m., according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The highway has four travel lanes, a center turn lane and “was not lighted.”
Tyndall was walking east in the roadway when a vehicle traveling north hit her and kept going, highway patrol said.
She died at the scene, according to highway patrol.
The other pedestrian, who was not publicly identified, was not hit or injured, highway patrol said. He told officials that the vehicle was “dark in color” and a four-door passenger vehicle.
Highway patrol is investigating the crash and asks anyone with information to call Lenoir County Highway Patrol at 252-522-1511 or the communication center at 252-792-4101.
No other information about the crash had been released as of Wednesday morning.
Lenoir County is in Eastern North Carolina, about 83 miles southeast of Raleigh.
