Horry County middle school student severely injured by bully, lawsuit claims
An Horry County middle school student suffered severe injuries to their head and neck after they were ‘bullied and attacked’ at school, a lawsuit filed Dec. 9 claims.
The child, a student at Ten Oaks Middle School, was the victim of ‘unprovoked contact’ from the bully on March 22, 2024, resulting in more than $77,000 in medical bills, according to the lawsuit. The legal action claims that the school failed to intervene and protect the student from being injured on the premises.
The lawsuit, which names the Horry County School District as the defendant, claims the school did not provide adequate supervision of the children, and failed to “appreciate the gravity of the known dangers associated with bullying.”
“Safety is a priority,” Horry County Schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier said in an email about the incident. “While we cannot comment publicly or with specificity on pending litigation, the district will respond appropriately throughout the judicial process.”
The lawsuit does not provide many specifics on the incident, but claims that the victim will continue to require medical care, treatment and attendant services costing a “significant amount of money.”
The child suffered loss of enjoyment of life and a personality change following the incident, according to the lawsuit, and will be permanently impacted.
The child’s guardian is suing the district for damages and legal costs.
