Horry County Schools starting free meal delivery service, retaking food prep control
Students attending certain schools within Horry County Schools will soon be eligible for free meal delivery services.
The district is partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Baylor University to begin operating a “Meals-to-You” program to deliver meals for free to eligible students’ doorsteps, according to a HCS email.
Students attending one of the Community Eligible Provision schools are eligible for the program. Those schools include: Daisy Elementary, Green Sea Floyds Elementary, Green Sea Floyds High, Homewood Elementary, Horry County Alternative School, Loris Elementary, Loris Middle, Myrtle Beach Early Childhood School, Myrtle Beach Elementary, Myrtle Beach Middle, Myrtle Beach Primary, Palmetto Bays Elementary, Pee Dee Elementary, Socastee Elementary, South Conway Elementary, Waccamaw Elementary, and Whittemore Park Middle.
Also eligible are students enrolled in a free or reduced meal program at other schools. Those schools include: ATA, Aynor Elementary, Aynor Middle, Blackwater Middle, Conway High, Conway Middle, Kingston Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Loris High, Midland Elementary, North Myrtle Beach High, North Myrtle Beach Middle, Ocean Drive Elementary, Riverside Elementary, and Waterway Elementary.
The deadline for parents to apply for the “Meals-to-You” program is Monday, and applications are available online at mealstoyou.org. Meals will be delivered through June 30.
Also on Monday, the school district will take back control of preparing student meals, with the assistance of the South Carolina National Guard, at their 13 pick-up and bus delivery locations through at least May 22. The service will be reevaluated after May 22, according to the district’s email.
The district had suspended their meal program April 16 after several employees tested positive for coronavirus, including a bus driver who died. It resumed last week with assistance from Operation BBQ Relief.
