Horry County Schools to resume meal program. Here’s when and where they will continue

Horry County Schools’ free meal program is set to resume Monday.

With assistance from Operation BBQ Relief, the program — which was suspended after several district employees serving the meals tested positive for coronavirus — will start back up and run through May 8, according to HCS spokesperson Lisa Bourcier.

Operation BBQ Relief, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has provided more than 3 million meals in disaster relief since 2011, the South Carolina Department of Education and the South Carolina National Guard have teamed up to help restore Horry County Schools’ meal program.

The efforts will allow HCS to resume bus-delivered meals and 13 pickup locations:

“With the many challenges facing families in our area, we are pleased to be able to help the students of Horry County by continuing to provide meals during this difficult time,” HCS stated in an email Sunday.

With several Horry County Schools employees having tested positive for COVID-19, the district suspended the meal program April 16. The same day, the district announced it was going to work with state and local officials to find a way to resume the program without using its employees.

In the time between the suspension of HCS’s meal program and Sunday’s announcement of plans to resume it several other organizations stepped up to fill the void. Organizations such as Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), Help 4 Kids and Meals on Wheels of Horry County increased their supply during the break.
