Will Horry County Schools close due to coronavirus? It isn’t the district’s decision

While schools across the country are closing in response to the spread of coronavirus, Horry County Schools will continue normal operations until state officials decide otherwise.

Superintendent Rick Maxey noted at Monday’s school board meeting that any closure decisions will be made by the state Department of Education.

Department spokesman Ryan Brown confirmed that those decisions will be made by them, in conjunction with the state Department of Health and Environmental Controls and Governor’s Office.

District spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier wrote in an email that HCS is actively working on an instruction plan to assist students in case state officials recommend closure.

There have been six confirmed cases and six presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 in South Carolina as of Friday, though no cases have been identified in Horry County.
