Man sentenced for using BB gun during a Myrtle Beach robbery. See his punishment

A man was sentenced to prison Tuesday for using a BB gun in a 2023 robbery of a Myrtle Beach convenience store.

Raymond Williams, 46, of Greenwood, pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery for using the BB gun and demanding money from the store’s register, according to a release sent Tuesday by the solicitor’s office. Williams was able to secure about $63 in cash from the register. He will now spend 10 years in prison.

Armed robbery is a two-strike, most serious offense according to the solicitor’s office. This means if Williams is ever convicted of any other serious offenses, he could be sentenced to life without parole.

“It does not matter to the Solicitor’s Office whether a defendant used a real gun, BB gun, or toy gun in the commission of an attempted robbery. We do not require our citizens to gamble with their lives in these situations,” said Seth Oskin, senior assistant solicitor in the release.

What happened at the Myrtle Beach Scotchman?

The attempted robbery took place at the Scotchman on 3rd Avenue in November 2023. An employee told police that Williams entered the store with a black face mask, holding a black handgun which he pressed against the employee’s abdomen, The Sun News previously reported.

Williams reportedly approached the employee, asking if he was the only one in the store. When the employee confirmed that he was, Williams motioned to the cash register and told him to hurry up, police reported.

The employee opened the register and Williams reached over the counter, taking $5 and $10 bills, the police report said. Williams then left the store and got into the passenger seat of a vehicle that drove away, heading south on Highway 15.

“Ten years today, next time it could be life. Crime is never worth it. But here, it especially wasn’t. Sixty-three dollars cost this defendant years of his life,” said Oskin.

Initially charged with armed robbery

Williams was initially arrested on charges of armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, The Sun News previously reported.

A woman, Jill Viscogliosi, 36, also was arrested in the incident and charged with being an accessory before the fact to a felony. Information has not been released about her potential sentencing.
