A Conway area road used by many drivers to travel between major highways will be temporarily closed as a stormwater project takes place.

A portion of Hemingway Chapel Road between Raspberry Lane and Augustus Drive closed Tuesday, with detours expected to remain in place until Feb. 9. The closure is clearing the way for a stormwater improvement project in the area Horry County announced online Monday.

During the closure, access will be limited to local driveways for residents located beyond Raspberry Lane. Drivers who use Hemingway Road to travel from Highway 378 to Cates Bay Highway are asked to plan alternate routes.

The stormwater project is one of five Horry County drainage projects being funded by a roughly $5.5 million grant from the Rural Infrastructure Authority.

This project will be focused on replacing a single undersized concrete pipe with three new, 48-inch and one new 36-inch concrete pipes, according to the county’s announcement. The improvements are aimed at reducing flooding upstream of Hemingway Chapel Road, as well as lessening flood impacts for about 10 homes in the area during major storms.

Other projects planned in the county will take place on Highway 9, 57th Place, Jones Road, and McCormick Road to Socastee Place, the county announced in December 2025.
