4 face slew of charges in Myrtle Beach armed robberies. Police call it a ‘troubling trend’

Four people are facing more than 50 charges after a string of armed robberies in popular Myrtle Beach tourist areas, including Broadway at the Beach.

The charges include carjacking, kidnapping and armed robbery.

The arrests come at a time when Myrtle Beach Police and city leaders have gone on the offensive about the safety of locals and visitors to downtown Myrtle Beach ahead of the busy tourist season. Police Chief Amy Prock has said that many of the violent crimes are committed by those who do not live in the city.

The police department took to Facebook late Thursday evening to talk about the crimes and post a video about the arrests.

“These individuals were visiting our city and are not from here,” a Myrtle Beach Police corporal said in a video posted to the department’s Facebook page.

The arrests follow a “troubling trend” of young adults who visit the city and commit offenses while here, said Traci Chanaca, captain of investigations for Myrtle Beach Police, in the video. “Those actions do not represent the heart of our city,” she said.

It also comes after a deadly mass shooting last month along a crowded tourist section of North Ocean Boulevard in downtown Myrtle Beach. An armed 18-year-old was shot and killed by a Myrtle Beach Police officer and 11 others were injured. Among those injured were at least three other teenagers who were shot.

The robberies occurred late May 13 and early May 14, a Facebook post from Myrtle Beach Police stated.

Arrested were:

  • Kaharee Simmons, 19, of Lexington, Kentucky, on charges of transporting open alcohol in a vehicle, four counts of accessory after the fact to a felony and criminal conspiracy
  • Asa Price, 19, of Columbia, South Carolina, charged with nine counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, five counts of armed robbery, first degree burglary, carjacking, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, first degree assault and battery, discharging a firearm into a vehicle and larceny

The first incident happened at Broadway at the Beach, 1100 block of Celebrity Circle Drive, where the suspects approached the victims while in their vehicle. They held the two victims at gunpoint and robbed them.

Other incidents include:

  • Near 2200 North Ocean Boulevard, two people approached a man in a parking lot. They robbed him at gunpoint and then fled.
  • In the 4000 block of North Kings Highway, two subjects approached the victim’s car and tried to enter the vehicle with a gun. The victim drove away before anything happened.
  • In the 6600 block of Colonial Drive, a man was held at gunpoint and forced to withdraw cash from an ATM.
  • In the 800 block of 65th Avenue North, a woman was robbed at gunpoint.

It is unclear how much money was stolen in the robberies and if all the victims involved were visitors. The Sun News has requested incident reports.
