Man charged in connection to crash that killed a pedestrian in Little River

A 37-year-old man is behind bars and accused of killing a pedestrian in Little River.

James Hampton Vereen was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Wednesday on a charge of hit-and-run involving a death. Bond has not been set in his case.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Brian Lee said Vereen was charged in connection to a July fatal crash with a pedestrian.

Horry County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to 4371 Baker St. at 6:04 a.m. on July 18 for the report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. A 2018 Dodge Ram hit Pamela Harding, 37, while driving north on Baker Street near North Horseshoe Drive, four miles north of North Myrtle Beach.

Harding died as a result of her injuries. She was legally in the road, Lee said.

Vereen went left of the center line and hit Harding, Lee said.
