Horry County coroner names homicide victim in Surfside Beach, one charged with murder

A Myrtle Beach area man was shot and killed in a homicide outside of Surfside Beach Thursday night.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Michael W. Pennington III, 33. He died from a gunshot wound, and his death has been called a homicide.

Horry County police went to a Maddington Place residence around 10 p.m. Thursday for a reported shooting that left one dead. Maddington Place is in the Cross Gate development off U.S. 17 outside of Surfside Beach.

When officers arrived, they saw Pennington with several people hovering over his body, according to a police report. A woman was applying pressure to the wound, the report states.

An officer tried to give first aid, until EMS confirmed Pennington died, according to the report.

Horry County police arrested Anijah Robert Yarnell, 20, in connection to the case. He is being held in J. Reuben Long Detention Center. The exact nature of his charges in unclear.

Yarnell has no previous criminal history in Horry County.
