Suspect dies while in custody at Horry County’s J. Reuben Long Detention Center
A 53-year-old man died while in custody at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
David Jonas died at the jail on Saturday from apparent natural causes, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
Jonas was found unresponsive in his bunk at the center, according to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office. Medical staff tried to give Jonas CPR and called for EMS. When EMS arrived, Jonas had no pulse.
An autopsy is set for Sunday.
Myrtle Beach police arrested Jonas earlier this month and charged him with receiving stolen goods. He was booked into the jail at 1:50 p.m. on Feb. 7. In January, police arrested Jonas on drug and credit card fraud charges.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will investigate the death, which is standard protocol for the Sheriff’s Office.
