New Myrtle Beach eatery opens in former Dagwood's. It has late-night chews & brews
Nearly a year after a longtime, popular sandwich shop in downtown Myrtle Beach closed, a new restaurant has opened in its location, hoping to restore the spot as a go-to place for locals.
Dagwood’s Deli and Bumstead’s Pub was “my local hangout,” said Dave Goodbread. When Goodbread found out that the deli was closing, he looked at it as an opportunity to open his own restaurant and bar.
Big Dave’s Chews & Brews, 400 Mr. Joe White Ave., opened last week. The sports bar features 40 TVs and a massive 100-inch big screen that will air games and major sporting events. There is also a full food menu that will be available until 1 a.m. The bar will be open until 2 a.m., Goodbread said.
“I wanted to create an affordable, fun and safe spot, where (people) can sit at the bar and talk with friends and order late-night food,” Goodbread said.
A new downtown hangout spot
Big Dave’s is Goodbread’s first restaurant, but he has managed other restaurants for 15 years.
Goodbread said the building, located on a corner across from Mammy’s restaurant and just a short distance from Ocean Boulevard, is in a beautiful location.
Dagwood’s had been open since 1988 before it closed in Aug. 30, 2025. It was a popular spot for both locals and tourists to go for lunch during the day and drinks in the evening at the adjoining Bumstead’s Pub.
Goodbread hopes to make Big Dave’s the new downtown hangout spot, appealing to the lunch crowd and the after-work crowd.
In addition to TVs, the restaurant also has dart machines, pool tables and other games.
