Before shooting off July 4 fireworks, see which Grand Strand cities allow them
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, several local government agencies are reminding people where fireworks are permitted in The Grand Strand.
In areas where fireworks are allowed for personal use, Horry County Fire Rescue warned residents to still be cautious.
“Because fireworks are inherently dangerous—commonly causing fires and traumatic medical injuries—our recommendation is clear: leave it to the professional,” Horry County Fire Rescue wrote in a post on June 24. “Go to a professional fireworks show, where organizers with safety precautions in mind will light up the skies for you.”
However, if you are still wondering which cities in the county allow fireworks on the Fourth of July, here’s what to know.
Myrtle Beach
The City of Myrtle Beach allows the use of fireworks on personal property year-round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. But on July 5, those hours are extended until 12:30 a.m.
The city’s firework law prohibits people from using fireworks on the beach or other public property. If violated, people will receive a $250 fine for the first offense and a $500 fine for second and subsequent violations in the same year.
While fireworks are allowed, people under the age of 18 have to have a guardian present to use them. It is also illegal under the city’s fireworks law to shoot or throw them toward any person, animal, structure or vehicle.
The city also does not permit fireworks within 500 feet of any church hospital or school or within 300 feet of a gas station that sells flammable goods, according to the law.
North Myrtle Beach
If you happen to live just across city lines in North Myrtle Beach, be prepared to not be able to set off fireworks in your backyard.
The City of North Myrtle Beach does not permit the people to activate fireworks within the city limits.
The city prohibits any person from using, firing, shooting, discharging, burning or igniting any fireworks, according to the law.
While you may not be able to set off fireworks in your own backyard, there will still be opportunities to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July. The City of North Myrtle Beach plans on hosting a free fireworks show at the Cherry Grove Pier from 9:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Conway
While the use of fireworks are prohibited year-round in Conway, the city makes an exception on July 4.
Fireworks are allowed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the holiday, according to the city’s website. However, they are only allowed to be used on private property and cannot be ignited in any public gathering or in public spaces.
Like Myrtle Beach, it is also illegal in Conway to use fireworks within 600 feet of any church hospital, asylum or public school.
The city also expects people to clean up all remnants of their fireworks, even if they are on personal property.
