Myrtle Beach hit by string of unlawful fires this month. Who’s starting them?
Myrtle Beach public safety agencies are investigating several small fires that have popped up in The Market Commons area of the city in the last month.
The first of the fires began around late May to early June, Myrtle Beach Fire Department spokesperson Capt. John Evans told The Sun News. It’s unclear exactly how many fires have been reported.
Within the city, residents are prohibited from open burnings unless they have the correct permits or contain the fire in an approved pit or enclosure.
The fires have mainly occurred near Emory Road, Crow Lane and the Meridian neighborhood, Evans said. Each fire has been quickly extinguished, and there’s no immediate threat to the public, according to the Facebook post from Myrtle Beach Police Department.
Investigators from Myrtle Beach’s police and fire departments “are working closely together to identify the person or persons responsible,” the Facebook post said.
Most of the fires have occurred in small areas that are uninhabited, Evans said.
“Most of the areas have been just heavily wooded areas,” Evans said. “There’s no buildings, no commercial property, which is good in one aspect, but to make it more difficult to get to those places.”
Both departments are asking locals to check their home security camera footage and to report any relevant information to the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s non-emergency line at 843-918-1382.
